HOUSTON (December 8, 2006) – Tuesday night, middle schooler Cesar Chavira wasn’t deciding whether to ask his mom for an iPod or Xbox for the holidays, but was giving her a gift instead - his gratitude. Chavira, along with his fellow students at Edison Middle School, took time to thank parents, family members, friends and instructors for their support of the students’ participation in the Prepared 4 Life after-school program at Appreciation Night. The program, currently operating in six HISD schools, integrates life skills, character education and entrepreneurship into experiential, fun after-school activities such as art, cooking and robotics.
“I’m really happy that my mom could be here today. She would do anything for me and this program is about me doing something for myself. I couldn’t do that if it wasn’t for her,” said Maggie Leal. “I love my dance class with Prepared 4 Life – it’s totally worth staying after school.”
Parents and other key figures in the kids’ lives received an appreciation certificate and coffee mug for their encouragement and support in the students’ continued engagement with Prepared 4 Life.
“Our program providers do everything they can to not only engage students in activities after school, but to really help shape their character and encourage them to take ownership of their lives,” said Arturo Gonzalez, Prepared 4 Life site leader. “For Prepared 4 Life youth, celebrating their parents’ or mentor’s role in their lives is part of that process.”
